Groundswell will present a brief history of activist art, from underground comics to murals. We will present how Groundswell has evolved from these traditions to create new, innovative public art projects that have lead to tangible change.
Participants will discuss how visual art has affected their own beliefs and how they feel how it is being effectively used in contemporary activism. They will brainstorm on what visual art projects could be used to further their own organization's missions.
Nicole Schulman is the lead artist of Groundswell's TEMA (Teen Empowerment Mural Apprenctice) after school program. (personal e-mail: nicoleschulman@earthlink.net)
