When Online Communities Attack: An Introduction to Moderation

Submitted by MattFriedrichs on Wed, 04/15/2009 - 10:07pm
Short Description:

You've developed a network of like-minded people, created an online space to facilitate conversation and generated a healthy discussion about the issues your group would like to address. Then disaster strikes. Negative comments from within, or from outside, start to derail the progress you're making. People start attacking one another personally. Agitators opposed to your activities try to derail progress. What do you do?

This session will provide moderation tips intended to promote discourse in, not suck the fun and life out of, communities large and small. We will discuss personal approaches and technical solutions and look at examples from large media companies and individual bloggers. We will also discuss how many comments it is possible for one person to read and moderate, as well as third-party moderation solutions for those with a budget.
