Proposal Submission Information

Length of Presentation: 1.5 hours per session, special consideration can be made for a limited number of 3 hour sessions based on time and space availability.

Formats:

Each should include opportunities for audience participation.

Presentations:

– Short presentation by no more than 4 panelists with time allocated for in-depth discussion with audience participants.

Workshops:

Instruction in hands-on media making or small group breakout discussions.

Campaigns:

Organizations building momentum around specific campaigns in the coming year can use this space to educate attendees and engage potential constituencies and allies in joining their efforts.

Content:

Each proposal should try to incorporate the theme of the Coalition mission: forging stronger connections between independent media and social justice community organizers. Some examples of past topics include (but are not limited to):

• Policy Matters: How Activism Can Change Who Controls the Media
• Public Access: Local and National Initiatives and Threats
• Culture Jamming 101
• Hip Hop Activism: Using Media and Popular Culture for Social Change
• Media Literacy 101
• People Speaking for Themselves: Community Organizations Taking Control of Media
• The ABC’s of Video Production
• Radio Lab: Sharing Frequencies
• Owning Our Own: Creating People’s Media and Rejecting Corporate Systems
• Youth Media: Do It Yourself: Make Your Own Public Service Announcement

Proposals should consider the NYC Grassroots Media Coalition’s mission to include diverse voices (in terms of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexuality, etc.) in every session.

All panelists must agree to arrive at the Conference no less than 30 minutes before the start of their panel.
